One of the good things about a city the size of Lincoln is the relatively stable
nature of its economy. Location and population of the city have served to create
a stable environment that can weather even recession conditions. While a lot
of this stability is the result of home-grown businesses that serve the population
in general (for example, hydro excavation by the city to put in underground
infrastructure) without a few key employers, the entire Lincoln economy might
vanish. Let's take a look at a few of the businesses in Lincoln that keep
the money circulating in the community.
State Government
Lincoln is, of course, the capital of the state of Nebraska, and any capital
city has a guaranteed base for a stable economy. Government is big business,
with very reliable income gathering techniques in the form of taxes, fines,
and lateral transfers from other organizations. The capitol buildings in Lincoln
see representatives from around the state arriving all year round for sessions,
where they create laws governing everything from proper lifting sling uses on
construction sites to state copyright protection.
Elected officials are not the only employees who contribute to Lincoln's
economic stability. Government depends on the work of countless bureaucrats
and other employees who see to the day-to-day workings of the system, and all
contribute to the economy of the city.
University of Nebraska
The main campus of the University of Nebraska is located in Lincoln, and is
yet another organization that provides guaranteed employment even in leaner
times. Universities continue to recruit students and carry on with scientific
research and experimental development even in the midst of a recession; in fact
it is this type of work that generally gets the economy rolling again. Students,
professors, deans, and support staff all provide a valuable contribution to
the foundation of Lincoln's economy. The University, in turn, assures
a place of employment for many Lincoln residents.
Bryan LGH Medical Center
The third single largest employer in the city is Bryan LGH. This company provides
the majority of top tier health care within the Lincoln region, which means
of course a lot of money moving through the system. Not only is that money derived
from patient care, but jobs are created even with the most menial seeming aspects
of the medical industry. Sterilized equipment must be seen to be so through
the use of a tamper evident band and other equipment, which has to be manufactured,
shipped, unloaded, and stored before use. All of these steps require the work
of separate employees, all of whom are paid in wages which support local businesses.
On that foundation, the rest of the economy of Lincoln is built. The construction
workers using a sheet metal crimper, the servers in your favorite restaurant,
even the mayor all count on these institutions to keep the economic ball rolling
in Lincoln.
